Black Panther has now won the box office for five straight weekends. It has made over $600 million in U.S. theaters. It is less than $20 million from passing The Avengers for fifth place on the all time box office list for domestic grosses. Black Panther is also just $55 million away from Titanic's third place position on the chart.Tomb Raider had a smaller opening than expected enabling Black Panther to hold the #1 spot. It made $23.2 million for a $6,104 per theater average. The film stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. It has a B CinemaScore.
I Can Only Imagine starring Dennis Quad and Cloris Leachman opened in third. It had a very good $10,476 per theater average during its opening weekend. The film tells the story behind MercyMe's hit song. It has a perfect A+ CinemaScore. A Wrinkle in Time faltered in its second weekend in theaters and made just $16.5 million.
The fifth placed film Love, Simon also has an A+ CinemaScore. The gay romantic coming out dramedy is based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. It stars Nick Robinson.
You can find this weekend's box office chart here. Black Panther will likely to continue to perform great in theaters but odds of a sixth straight box office #1 look unlikely with Pacific Rim Uprising opening this coming weekend. Other openers include Isle of Dogs, Unsane and Sherlock Gnomes.
