Tierney Named to Take Safire's Spot

The New York Times has finally filled the gaping hole in its editorial space because of the departure of William Safire. Conservative columnist John Tierney will now write two columns a week, starting in April, the paper announced today.

Tierney has worked for the Times since 1990 and has had a number of assignments for the paper. But it sounds like it was his Political Points" column during the 2004 presidential campaign that really impressed his bosses.

Safire departed last November and will be running the Dana Foundation.
