New Screenwriter Hired for The Subtle Knife

Posted on January 12, 2007

SciFi Wire reports that New Line has hired a new screenwriter to tackle the adaptation of The Subtle Knife, the second book in the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman.
The first book, The Golden Compass, is currently in production at Shepperton Studios in London. Chris Weitz (About a Boy) is writing and directing the $150 million film, set for release later this year.

Compass stars British newcomer Dakota Blue Richards as 12-year-old Lyra Belacqua, who travels to a parallel universe to battle the forces of evil and rescue her best friend. Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig and Eva Green also star. In The Subtle Knife, Pullman introduces the character of a 12-year-old boy who has learned the art of invisibility and is seeking his missing father when he encounters a vanishing cat and joins forces with Lyra.

New Line's plans to produce the second and third stories will depend on the performance of the first one, the trade paper reported. But the hiring of Amini represents a significant commitment toward going ahead with the next film.
The early buzz from the first film, The Golden Compass is good, with Nicole Kidman reportedly doing a stellar job as Mrs. Coulter. We can't wait to see it.
