J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Chair Up for Auction

Posted on March 12, 2016

The chair J.K. Rowling sat in while she was writing the first two Harry Potter books is being auctioned off by Heritage Auctions. She used the chair while writing drafts for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The oak chair was later hand-painted by the author. This is the third time the chair has been auctioned.

J.K. Rowling used gold, rose, and green paint to decorate the chair. The chair contains the phrase "You may not find me pretty but don't judge on what you see." It also says, "I wrote Harry Potter while sitting on this chair." The chair also contains the word "Gryffindor." It has J.K.'s signature on top and "Harry Potter" in front of the seat.

The chair auction also contains the Owl Post that Rowling typed and signed to the winner of the first auction. The letter says, "Dear new-owner-of-my-chair. I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn't. J. K. Rowling."

The auction listing can be found here on the Heritage Auctions website. The opening video is $45,000. Take a look:
