Concise Oxford English Dictionary Adds Retweet, Textspeak

Posted on August 19, 2011

The new edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary includes words like retweet and textspeak. This is also the centenary edition of the dictionary, which was first published in 1911.

The latest edition includes 400 new entries. Some of the other added words include: cyberbullying, domestic goddess, gastric band, sextiny and slow food. Some words also have updated meanings, such as follower, which has added the following definition: "someone who is tracking a particular person, group, etc. on a social networking site."

The Oxford University Press says the Oxford English Dictionary was designed to be a dictionary that "sought primarily to cover the language of its own time." The first edition of 1911 included modern words of the time, such as aeroplane, carburettor, motorist and radioactive.
