Wes Anderson and Dan Gilroy Nominated for Screenwriting Oscars

Posted on January 15, 2015

The Oscar nominations were announced this morning and there were some surprises and a few snubs. The presentation itself went off smoothly except for one snafu.

While announcing the nominees for Best Cinematography Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs managed to pronounce such names as Emmanuel Lubezki, Luksasz Zal and Ryszard Lynzewski correctly, then mangled the pronunciation of cinematographer Dick Pope's name (he is nominated for his word on Mr. Turner). She read out the name "Dick Poop!" There were giggles in the room and even Ms. Isaacs had to laugh, before correcting herself and moving on. Twitter erupted as Dick Poop became the Adele Dazeem for this year's Oscars. The highly respected, 67 year old cinematographer laughed off the snafu, saying "You know what, I have been called a lot worse in my time."

In the Adapted Screenplay category Paul Thomas Anderson picked up a nomination for his adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel into Inherent Vice. Jason Hall picked up a nomination for American Sniper, a film that got nominated a many categories, including Best Picture and Best Actor, although Clint Eastwood did not get a Best Director nod.

Anthony McCarten's screenplay for The Theory of Everything and Graham Moore's script for The Imitation Game were expected to get nominated, so no surprise there. The last spot was filled by Damien Chazelle for Whiplash. Gillian Flynn was snubbed for adapting her own novel Gone Girl into a feature film.

In the Original Screenplay category, Birdman's Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo picked up a nomination as did Richard Linklater for Boyhood. Wes Anderson and Hugo Guinness picked up a well-deserved nod for The Grand Budapest Hotel, which also got a Best Picture nod. E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman were nominated for Foxcatcher, and Dan Gilroy got a nomination for Nightcrawler. Birdman just won the same category at the Golden Globes, and is looking good here, although we wouldn't count out Wes Anderson.
