Trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane Raises Questions for Cloverfield Fans

The first trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane has dropped and it's very promising. J.J. Abrams says the film is a "blood relative" to the film Cloverfield, so it's not a sequel but is set in the same world. The trailer opens showing what looks like a normal family is inside a rec room doing normal family things, eating dinner, playing games, watching tv. Quickly we realize that the "house" is actually a bunker and at least one person is not there voluntarily.

The set up is that a young woman named Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has been in a car accident and awakens in the bunker. John Goodman's character tells her there has been a terrible chemical attack and that they can't go outside or they will die. As time goes on Michelle gets more skeptical and wants to leave the bunker. In the trailer we get shots of her trying to get outside while John Goodman's character yells at her frantically, "No! No! NO, don't!! Don't open that door -- you're going to get all of us killed!!!"

The sound effects and eerie lighting tells us something weird is going on outside. And given the fact that this is set in the Cloverfield universe, it seems highly unlikely that Goodman's character is some mad kidnapper who has made up a story to keep her inside. So, what has happened? It is nuclear war? A chemical attack? Or maybe....just maybe, the mama and daddy of the Cloverfield monster have come to see what happened to Junior. In that case everyone in that bunker is in a lot of trouble.

At the end of the first Cloverfield movie the American military nuked New York City to kill the monster. But at the end of thefilm it was clear that Junior was still alive. So, did they nuke another city to kill him or his parents? Is that why they're in the bunker?

The film was directed by Dan Trachtenberg, and also stars John Gallagher, Jr. It was originally entitled Valencia, which explains how it got made without attracting any attention. There have been reshoots and it will hit theatres on March 11. 2016. Given the viral marketing campaign for the first film, we have a feeling that the bunker is just part of the overall story.
