The Huntsman: Winter's War Fails to Stop The Jungle Book From Dominating Box Office

Posted on April 25, 2016

The Jungle Book was the dominant film in the U.S. for the second consecutive weekend. It made $60 million falling just 41% from its opening weekend. It has now made $191 million after just two weekends in theaters in the U.S. It has made over $528 million worldwide.

The Huntsman: Winter's War failed to stop The Jungle Beak and had a weak opening overall. It made $20 million in 3,791 theaters for a $5,297 per theater average. The film starring Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth and Emily Blunt has a B+ CinemaScore. By comparison, Snow White and the Huntsman had a much bigger $56 million opening in June 2012.

The Hunstman was followed by Barbershop: The Next Cut, Zootopia, The Boss, Batman v Superman, Criminal and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Zootopia is now making more than Batman v Superman even though it has been in theaters for three more weeks. Zootopia has made $316 million compared to $319 million for Batman v Superman. Zootopia looks likely to eventually have a larger box office than the big DC superhero film.

A couple other new films this weekend included Compadres and A Hologram for the King. Both opened in around 400 theaters. Compadres is a comedy starring Omar Chaparro and Joey Morgan that has a cop teaming up with a hacker to stop a crime lord. A Hologram for the King stars Tom Hanks as a failed businessman who travels to Saudi Arabia to pitch a deal.

A Hologram for the King was followed by God's Not Dead 2, Miracles from Heaven and Miles Ahead. You can find the box office report for the weekend here.

The films opening this weekend may not have what it takes to dethrone The Jungle Book. They include Keanu, Mother's Day and Ratchet & Clank. The Jungle Book may be able to stop atop the box office until Captain America: Civil War arrives in theaters on May 6.
