The Girl on the Train Wins Weekend Box Office

The Girl on the Train was the top earning movie in theaters this weekend with a $24.6 million opening. The suspense thriller stars Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson and Justin Theoroux. It is based on the novel by Paula Hawkins. The film has a B- CinemaScore.
The Girl on the Train was followed by Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which added $15 million during its second weekend in theaters to bring its total gross to $51 million. Deepwater Horizon was third with a take of $11.8 million.
Deepwater was followed by The Magnificent Seven and Storks. The Birth of a Nation opened in sixth and made $7.1 million in 2,105 theaters. The lower-than-expected opening may be due in part to controversy surrounding the film's star and director Nate Parker as Deadline explains. The film has an A CinemaScore.
The Birth of a Nation was followed by Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life. It stars Griffin Gluck in the lead role. The film was adapted from a James Patterson novel. It has an A- CinemaScore.
