Solo Tops Memorial Day Weekend Box Office

Posted on May 27, 2018

Solo: A Star Wars Story topped the Memorial Day Weekend box office. It has made $83.3 million through Sunday and is expected to make over $100 million for the long weekend. This a big opening but it was on the smaller side for a Star Wars film. CNN notes that it was the smallest opening for Star Wars movie since 2002.

Solo has an A- Cinemascore. It stars Aldren Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Thandie Newton as Val, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca and Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra. Ron Howard is the director.

Solo was followed by Deadpool 2 which added $42.7 million to bring its total gross to $207 million after two weekend in theaters. Avengers: Infinity War finished third and added $16.4 million. It has now made $621 in theaters after five weekends. It looks likely to catch Black Panther which has made just shy of $700 million at the U.S. box office this year.

Avengers was followed by Book Club, Life of the Party, Breaking In, Show Dogs and Overboard. You can find the box office chart for the weekend here.

Solo has a good shot at repeating this coming weekend. The new arrivals it will face include Action Point, Adrift, American Animals and Upgrade. The next blockbuster release is Ocean's 8 on June 8th.
