Ride Along 2 Wins Weekend Box Office

Posted on January 19, 2016

Ride Along 2 was the top movie in theaters this weekend. It opened with $35.3 million which was less than the opening for Ride Along. Ride Along made $41.5 million during its opening weekend in January 2014. However, the opening should be good enough to pave the way for another Ride Along film.

Ride Along was closely followed by The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Revenant, which has strong Oscar buzz, made $31.8 million during its fourth weekend in theaters. It has now made $135 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens finished third and added another $26 million during its fifth weekend in theaters. The Force Awakens has now passed the $850 mark in the U.S. It has made $1.87 billion worldwide.

The Force Awakens was followed by 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, which opened with $16 million. The film tells the story of the attack on an American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Daddy's Home was next in fifth place. It added $9.5 million during its fourth weekend in theaters to bring its total gross to $129 million. The other opening film this weekend was the animated film Norm of the North. It made just $6.8 million in 2,411 theaters.

Norm was followed by The Forest, The Big Short, Sisters, The Hateful Eight and Joy. Films opening this weekend include Dirty Grandpa, The 5th Wave, The Boy and Synchronicity. If the new films have a week debut it could give The Force an opening to return to the top position.
