Jude Law Faces Intrigue in the Vatican in First Trailer for The Young Pope

Posted on September 5, 2016

Jude Law stars in the trailer for The Young Pope the scandalous new miniseries produced by HBO and Studio Canal. Jude stars as Lenny Belardo, the first American Pope. We meet Lenny -- or Pope Pius XIII as he is now known --on his first day in office at the Vatican. Pope Pius is not your average pope. An orphan, he was raised by a nun at an orphanage, Sister Mary, who is played by Diane Keaton. Pope Pius immediately moves Sister Mary into the Vatican, which does not sit well with his staff.

But that is just the beginning of the changes that this pope has planned. We get an idea of his personality in the first scene when he is at confession. He is confessing to a priest and when he is asked about his sins he replies, "I don't have any sins to confess." This is not because he hasn't committed any sins, by the way. He smokes, he is quite interested in women and he is absolutely ruthless. When asked what he has planned he replies, "Revolution."

The miniseries will focus on the machinations and political intrigue in the Vatican. James Cromwell and Silvio Orlando co-star. The Telegraph referred to it as House of Cardinals due to the pope's similarity to Frank Underwood in House of Cards, played so brilliantly by Kevin Spacey. The miniseries was directed by Italian Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino who boldly screened the first two episodes at the Venice Film Festival.

We cannot wait for this one: we know it's going to be completely over the top. It will air on HBO later this year. In the UK it will premiere on October 27th on Sky Atlantic. Take a look:
