Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence Are Stuck on a Spaceship in Passengers Trailer

Posted on September 20, 2016

Sony has released the first trailer for Passengers. In the future, a large spacecraft is sent to a distant colony planet with more than 5,000 humans who signed up for the trip. The ship, the Avalon, will travel for 120 years with its passengers in cryo. When the sleep pods malfunction two people end up awakened 90 years too early, with no way to go back into hibernation.

Jennifer Lawrence plays Aurora Dunn, a New York writer who signed on for the luxury version of the trip. She wants to write about the journey and their new destination. Chris Pratt plays Jim Preston, an engineer who took the more basic version of the trip to see a new world where his skills will be highly valued.

Now Aurora and they are awake, trapped on a ship that is malfunctioning. The gravity goes out and one by one, the ship's systems are failing. Unfortunately they have no way of getting into the control room which is sealed shut from the passengers.

Towards the end of the trailer we get a bunch of very quick images, including Aurora pulling an injured Jim into a safe space and four people walking through the ship that are wearing uniforms. One of the men is wearing wings on his shirt and has three stars and two silver stripes on his cuffs which seems to indicate he is a military officer of some kind. Is this from before the ship left Earth or when they get to their destination? Or is there someone really running this ship all along? After all, it's clear they can't get into the control room, maybe someone is actually awake dudring this voyage.

We also get one brief shot of Lawrence Fishburne, looking over his shoulder -- he's also wearing one of the blue military uniforms. The film also stars Michael Sheen as the android Arthur who spends his time tending bar in the trailer, Aurora Perrineau, Jamie Soricelli, and Kimberly Battista. The film was directed by Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2016. Take a look:
