Janet Evanovich Signs Four Book Deal With Random House
Janet Evanovich is leaving St. Martin's Press for Random House Publishing Group. The publisher acquired worldwide hardcover, paperback, audio, and ebook publication rights for four new Evanovich novels from Peter Evanovich, the author's agent and son.
More than 75 million copies of Ms. Evanovich's 33 novels have been sold around the world. Her June title, Sizzling Sixteen, debuted at #1 on the N.Y. Times Hardcover Fiction list, as did the previous 10 books in series starring Stephanie Plum. Actress Katherine Heigl will be playing Stephanie Plum in an upcoming motion picture.
The world publication rights for the new Evanovich novels were acquired by Jennifer Hershey, Editor-in-Chief, Ballantine Bantam Dell. Two of the books will be Stephanie Plum novels, and the other two will be in the author's newer "Unmentionable" series. The first will be published simultaneously as a Bantam hardcover and ebook edition in Summer 2011.
Janet Evanovich said in a statement, “I started my career as a Bantam author, and I'm very excited to be returning. Their sales, distribution, and marketing make them the perfect partner for me and my work. Load up the U-Haul; break out the pizza and the beer -- it's moving day for Stephanie, Joe, Ranger, Diesel and me!”
Janet Evanovich reportedly failed to land a $50 million advance from her former publisher St. Martin's Press. Forbes says the $50 advance request was reasonable, considering "Evanovich's selling power is comparable to a Ken Follett or James Patterson."

Stephen Rubin is New Executive VP of Random House
The former head of Doubleday has a new job at Random House. Stephen Rubin will be the new executive vice president and publisher at large. He will report to Random House CEO Markus Dohle.
The man who published "The Da Vinci Code" has a new job at Random House, two months after his division was dismantled in a companywide reorganization.
*****
At Doubleday, Rubin published Dan Brown's megaseller, along with blockbusters by John Grisham and Pat Conroy. Doubleday was shut down and its imprints dispersed after Random House reduced its major divisions from five to three in December.
Rubin's responsibilities include collaborating with Random House publishers worldwide on book acquisitions and continuing to work on projects with Grisham, Conroy and other writers.
The move certainly makes sense. If you don't have a position available for the man who published The Da Vinci Code, then you simply create one. You certainly don't let him get away, even if you just demolished his book imprint.

Random House Announces Internal Reorganization
Random House is undergoing a major reorganization. The heads of two of the publisher's divisions are resigning:
Irwyn Applebaum, publisher of Bantam Dell, and Steve Rubin, publisher of Doubleday Publishing Group, will both be leaving. Random House is owned by Bertelsmann, the German media conglomerate. Berteslmann put Markus Dohle -- who used to run the printing unit -- in charge of Random House, so some changes were expected.
In a memo to staff, Mr. Dohle announced changes that elevated the roles of Gina Centrello, head of the company's so-called Little Random unit, Sonny Mehta, head of the venerable Alfred A. Knopf group and Jenny Frost, president of the Crown Publishing Group, publisher of two memoirs by president elect Barack Obama.
In the new organization, Ms. Centrello will now oversee the Random House Publishing Group, which includes the Ballantine division, as well as the Bantam Dell Publishing Group, the Dial Press and a relatively new imprint of Doubleday, Spiegel & Grau.
Mr. Mehta's empire will expand to include the Doubleday and Nan A. Talese imprints....Ms. Frost will take over several imprints from the Doubleday Group, including Doubleday Business, Doubleday Religion and WaterBrook Multomah.
In his memo, Mr. Dohle said that the Ballantine, Bantam Dell and Random House imprints would maintain separate editorial departments. Mr. Dohle said that each imprint could continue to bid on new books independently at auctions and would remain autonomous in decisions about what and how to publish.
Mr. Dohle noted that "because of the current economic crisis, our industry is facing some of the most difficult times in publishing history."
No layoffs have been announced yet, but Doubleday has already laid off 10% of its staff in October.
