Danielle Steel's Former Assistant Admits She Embezzled From Employer for Years
Bestselling author Danielle Steel was shocked to discover that her assistant of fifteen years had been systematically embezzling from her. Kristy Watts, who also went by the name Kristy Siegrist, plead guilty today in U.S. District Court in San Francisco to one count of wire fraud and four counts of tax evasion. She will face sentencing on February 4th.
From 1993 to December 2008, when she was fired, Watts kept the books, handled payroll and accounting, and coordinated household and travel expenses for Steel, who lives in San Francisco.
She admitted that she stole at least $400,000 from Steel in a variety of ways, including depositing numerous checks that had been payable to "cash" to her own bank account.
Watts used Steel's credit-card reward points to purchase gift cards and airline tickets for herself and her family, authorities said. She also paid herself more than the actual salary she was due.
To hide what she had done, Watts made false entries in the accounting system of Steel's business operation, TPA Co., prosecutors said.
Watts also tried to evade much of the federal income tax she owed for 2004 through 2007, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
What a terrible thing to have happened. Danielle Steel is now suing her former aid to get $2.7 million back, which was allegedly spent on remodeling and refurbishing a home in San Rafael. Danielle has said that she sometimes works up to twenty hours a day working on her next book and trusted her book keeper/assistant to keep track of her finance. The author is reported to make close to $30 million a year: there are half a billion of her books in circulation worldwide.

Danielle Steel Goes Digital
Danielle Steel has just digitized
71 of her books.
The prolific, best-selling novelist said Thursday that 71 of her books -- and that's not even all of them — will be made available digitally Feb. 24, including her latest, "One Day at a Time." Other works include "Sunset in St. Tropez," "The Promise" and "Leap of Faith."
In recent weeks, John Grisham and Tom Clancy also have agreed to allow their novels to come out as e-books, a tiny, but quickly growing market.
Now that the new Kindle is here (pre-orders will ship first come, first serve on February 24th) many more major authors are digitizing their books. After all, you don't want your readers not to be able to load your books on their new Kindle.

Danielle Steel Dreamed of Being a Nun
When she was a child, bestselling author Danielle Steel wanted
to be a Catholic nun. But bestsellerdom got in the way.
Her plans for a life of poverty, however, went awry when she married at 17 and began writing at age 19. Steel has since sold more than 560 million books and on Tuesday will publish her 72nd novel "Honor Thyself."
"I wanted to be a nun when I was young," Steel, 60, whose success has made her a regular on the New York Times bestseller list, told Reuters in a rare interview. "Religion is what keeps me going, I would be utterly lost without it."
Steel's life is quite a contrast with the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience taken by nuns. She has been married five times, has seven biological and two adopted children and splits her time between homes in San Francisco and Paris.
But while she didn't choose to become a nun, religion has remained a strong part of her life.
"I was brought up a rabid Catholic and there have been times -- like when my son died and my (fourth) husband had left me -- I went to mass twice a day just to hang on," she said. "It's a very present support system for me."
"It's not for everybody but it works for me," she said.
Steel said she also used her writing as a refuge when her son Nicholas Traina committed suicide just over a decade ago at the age of 19. Traina had bipolar disorder, characterized by abrupt mood swings.
We feel sure that her publisher is profoundly grateful that she did not enter the nunnery. Instead, she's sold more than 560 million books worldwide. Her new novel is Honor Thyself.
