Kindle Worlds Announces Deals With Veronica Mars, G.I. Joe and Ravenswood

Posted on February 5, 2014

Fan fiction writers now have some new worlds to explore. Amazon Publishing announced that it has inked deals with Hasbro and Warner Bros. to allow fans to write fiction in the G.I. JOE, Veronica Mars and Ravenswood worlds. Ravenswood is a Pretty Little Liars spinoff The company also announced deals with authors Marcus Sakey, Theresa Ragan, and Valiant Entertainment. Using Kindle Worlds, writers can create fan fiction in any of the licensed worlds and share in the proceeds if their works sell. The new worlds will be available in the next few months.

Michael Kelly, Hasbro's Director of Global Publishing, talked about the deal in a statement: "Since 1964, G.I. JOE has inspired the imagination of multiple generations by providing a backdrop of excitement and adventure. Whether exploring the secrets of the mummy's tomb, or defending freedom from the evil plots of COBRA, G.I. JOE has been there. "It is with equal excitement that Hasbro now enters a new segment of the business by embracing the concept of open-source storytelling, and officially unlocking the world of G.I. JOE to our fans through Amazon's Kindle Worlds."

We are huge Veronica Mars fans and can't wait for the feature film. There are also two novels in the works. Creator Rob Thomas wanted to open up the world to fans and now all the characters are available for writers to use. "Veronica Mars' fans are amazingly loyal and anything we can do to give them more access to her world and that of her character is great," said Thomas. "I'm looking forward to seeing what new worlds and characters are created by fans and Kindle Worlds writers."

Kindle Worlds is an interesting concept. Current Kindle Worlds include The Vampire Diaries, the World of Kurt Vonnegut, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars and The Dead Man, with more worlds being added over time. Will there be a large market for authorized, fan-created fiction? We feel like some of the writers will pick up a following.
