George R.R. Martin Gets Grilled by Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers

Posted on November 1, 2014

George R.R. Martin has a new book out. No, it's not the next installment in the Song of Fire of Ice. It's actually the untold history of Westeros. The tome, called The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones was co-written with Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson, the founders of the fan site Westeros.org.

George is making the rounds to promote his book. One of the most entertaining appearances so far was on the Late Night With Seth Meyers. Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers set out to test Martin's knowledge of his own dialogue. They would each read a line of dialogue and Martin would have to say which character said the line.

Things started out fairly easily. Amy asked George which character said "The night is dark and full of terrors." Martin correctly answered that it was the sorceress Melisandre. Amy then asked who said "Hodor!"? Martin guessed Hodor (it's all he really says), but Amy told him he was wrong. It was actually Bran trying to get Hodor's attention.

When asked who said "Winter is Coming", Martin replies, "that's from House Stark, half the people in the book say this." Amy said "no, those are the words of Westerros 9 meteorologist Breeze Daniels." Martin also got this line of dialogue wrong. When asked who said "You know nothing Jon Snow," Martin replied that it was Ygritte, the Wilding. Amy corrected him saying it was the Winterfell math tutor Mrs. Puddlefinch who uttered those lines.

Martin was stumped by the last one, which was "which character said, '"It's hot in here, do you mind if I take my top off?" The answer is, of course, every character on the show. Martin is such a good sport and seemed to get a kick out of the gag. Later in the same episode he knighted Seth as a Sir Seth of the Pizza, in tradition with a knighting tradition that started at a convention and got really out of control over the years.

Watch Martin get grilled by Amy and Seth: it's really funny. Take a look:
