Bestselling Author Michael Palmer Dies at 71

Bestselling author and physician Dr. Michael Palmer has died at the age of 71. According to The New York Times Palmer was returning from a safari vacation in Africa and was going through customs at Kennedy International airport in New York when he had a heart attack. He died the next day from complications of a heart attack and stroke, according to his family. Palmer wrote nineteen popular thrillers, including Extreme Measures, Natural Causes and The First Patient. He has more than 5 million copies of his books in print. His 20th novel, titled Resistant, will be released in May, 2014.

Palmer practiced internal medicine for many years, then changed his practice to that of a busy ER doctor. He began writing as a way to help with his recovery from substance abuse. Palmer bravely went public with his struggles as a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, which helped shine a light on the addiction issues in the medical world. He had became addicted to painkillers after a knee operation and also had issues with alcohol. Palmer eventually retired from practice of medicine and spent countless hours helping doctors struggling with substance abuse issues.
