Dan Brown Talks Inferno With Stephen Colbert Bestselling author Dan Brown was a guest on The Colbert Report to talk about his new book Inferno. Stephen asked Dan why all his books have puzzles to solve in them and why they are so complicated. Dan explained, "I love puzzles. My dad is a big code guy, He's an internationally bestselling math textbook author. I grew up with codes and symbols in the house. We had treasure hunts and ciphers....it's a bit of a fixation." Stephen wanted to know if Dean likes anagrams (we all know he loves them, of course). Stephen then proceeded to make anagrams out of Dan's name, such as "Brand Now" and "Bran Down". When asked why he wrote about Dante's Inferno, Dan said, "I'd never written about the literary arts.. what better piece of literature to base Inferno on? It was a thriller in its day...I wrote this with the hopes that people who love thriller and be inspired to discover or rediscovers one of the greatest books ever written." Stephen also gave Dan lots of grief about writing unflattering things about the Catholic Church, asking him if he wrote about Dante's Inferno to experience where he is going after he dies. Rowling Reveals the Origins of Quidditch in Unique Annotated First Edition to Be Auctioned for Charity J.K. Rowling has contributed a signed, annotated first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to be auctioned off at Sotheby's on May 21st to benefit the charity English PEN. The auction is called First Editions, Second Thoughts and it features first editions of interesting books with original commentary and 22 new ink drawings by the author. Rowling has contributed a number of drawings showing how she first imagined the characters in the book to look like. She also gives insight on how she created many things in the books, such as the game of Quidditch. About Quidditch she says, "[Quidditch] was invented in a small hotel in Manchester after a row with my then boyfriend. I had been pondering the things that hold a society together, cause it to congregate and signify its particular character and knew I needed a sport. It infuriates men...which is quite satisfying given my state of mind when I invented it." On another page in the book Rowling writes, "I wrote the book in snatched hours, in clattering cafes and or the dead of night. For me, the whole story of how I wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is written invisibly on every page and legible only to me." There are 43 pages in the book with new annotations. Five Authors Selected as Candidates for Nobel Prize in Literature Five writers have been selected as finalists for the 2013 Nobel Prize, but as usual the names have not been revealed. Speculation as to who made the list began after the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy tweeted the news. The Novel Prize for Literature is always shrouded in mystery. No one even knows the date that the winner will be revealed. That date is announced at a later time. The other Nobel Prizes are announced between October 7th and October 14th. Stephen Colbert and Carey Mulligan Get Intellectual and Discuss The Great Gatsby Stephen Colbert decided to read The Great Gatsby and discuss the book with Carey Mulligan, who stars as Daisy in the new film version of the classic book by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Stephen dressed in a white suit with a boater hat for his book chat. His hair was parted and slicked back, 1920s-style. At a table covered with his awards, Stephen got serious with Carey. Stephen asked her what the major themes of the movie are. She replied that they are the same as the ones in the book, which clearly he had read. He finally admits he didn't read the book because "it's a monster." But he needs Carey's help because Jennifer Egan is going to be on the show and will want to discuss literature. Carey sums up the plot for him, but it quickly becomes clear that she doesn't know the plot either. She defends herself explaining, "You always shoot movies out of order! I can never figure out the plot! ...and I can't read!" It's hilarious. We had no idea Carey could be so funny, as she confesses her dark secret. Take a look: Posted on May 11, 2013 Permalink  | Comments (View) |  Tweet Translators Working on Dan Brown's Inferno Kept Locked in Publisher's High-Security Basement for Days Security has been extraordinarily tight for Ban Brown's upcoming novel, Inferno, which will be released on May 14. Dan Brown's publishers wanted the book to be published in multiple languages simultaneously, so they hired several translators. The Independent reports that the translators were locked in the basement of Mondadori's headquarters in Milan where high security procedures were enacted to keep any text from the book leaking online. Here are some of the security procedures involved in translating Inferno: Translators were locked in Mondadori's windowless high-security basement There were armed security guards in the room. There was only one computer connected to the Internet in the room. Translators could use it, but they would be watched by an armed security guard while they surfed the Internet or sent email. Translators worked on their translations seven days a week until 8 p.m. The translators' laptops were screwed to their workstations and could not be removed. The translators had to sign a log book whenever they left the bunker explaining why they were leaving. The translators were allowed to eat in the cafeteria at Mondadori but they had to use an assigned cover story to explain what they were doing there. They could certainly not say, "I'm here translating Dan Brown's Inferno." The manuscripts were stored in safes when not in use. It almost sounds as if Dan Brown came up with this security protocol himself. The Independent says the experience was highly unusual for translators, who usually work alone. However, one translator enjoyed the experience and said the high-security bunker had a "playground atmosphere" by the end. Inferno has not leaked online, so it must have been a success.
